Of British Columbia's seven national parks, two are located on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Pacific Rim National Park Reserve The exposed west coast of Vancouver Island offers many spectacular features in the park: the mighty Pacific Ocean, the long sandy beaches, the rugged and rocky coastline, an island archipelago, an ancient temperate coastal rainforest, and important First Nations archaeological sites. The rugged and, in many places, mountainous west coast is characterized by fjords, bays and inlets. It is also known for beaches such as Long Beach and Wickaninnish Beach in the Pacific Rim National Park, between Ucluelet and Tofino BC.
The interior of the island has many lakes. Fernwood has many parks and amenities, such as an off-leash dog area in Alexander Park and children's play areas in Stadacona Park.
